Introduction

The York and District Branch of the BPS is a long-established one, with a membership of about twenty. Members are from all over Yorkshire and the North East and we even have a number from west of the Pennines! We are mainly hobby printers, but we have in our ranks people whose interests range over botanical illustration, engraving on wood and vinyl, paper-making of the hand-made as well as the machine variety, letterpress and computer-assisted printing, publication of books on local history and typographical subjects, to mention a few, and whose occupations have included teachers, lecturers, professional printers, engineers, police, artists and railwaymen. Most are now retired, and therefore able to devote time to the Black Art, and to help and encourage others in it.

Meetings

We generally have a meeting once a month at various venues, members' presses, for instance, and museums and other places of printing interest. The photograph taken at a meeting at The Parrot Press near Hull and shows members demonstrating the use of an Adana press.
